Shale gas is natural gas produced from shale rock deep below the surface of the earth. Shale gas has become increasingly important in the US over the past decade because of its ability to expand the worldwide energy supply.
Utica Shale is heavily concentrated in Northeast Ohio. The Utica's size, geology and organic content make it a promising economic development opportunity with the potential to create hundreds of jobs and transform the region's economy.
NorTech is currently working with stakeholders in Northeast Ohio and across the state to maximize the economic opportunity from the Utica shale in Northeast Ohio. NorTech and its stakeholders are focusing their economic development efforts in two main areas:
- Workforce Development
- Engaging with workforce development stakeholders to address the demand for skilled workers and ensure that Ohio workers are prepared for employment opportunities within this industry.
- Supply Chain
- Organizing supply chain stakeholders to maximize regional participation in shale gas industry. For example, regional stakeholders are developing specific initiatives to connect local manufacturers with opportunities to provide materials, supplies and equipment to the value chain. There is also an opportunity to attract companies from outside the region to support the local supply chain.
