NorTech

Energy Efficiency

NorTech has developed a series of advanced energy roadmaps to accelerate job growth and regional economic impact in Northeast Ohio's advanced energy industry over the next seven years. The energy efficiency roadmap provides a detailed vision and action plan to achieve growth in this sector by focusing on Northeast Ohio's core assets, markets, strengths and competitive advantage. NorTech is working with its partners in the advanced energy cluster and the region's economic development ecosystem to implement the energy efficiency action plan.

Segments

Solid-State Lighting
Vision: To become a supply chain leader through
emphasis on collaborative developments of a
cost-competitive supply base.

Solid-State Lighting includes light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
Unlike incandescent or fluorescent lamps, which create
light with filaments and gases encased in a glass bulb,
solid-state lighting consists of semiconductors that convert
electricity into light. Advantages of solid-state lighting over
incandescent light sources includes lower energy
consumption, longer lifetime, improved physical robustnuss,
smaller size, and faster switching.

Non-Fiberglass Insulation
Vision: To become a leader through unique
financing models and policies that drive
development of deep building retrofits
Non-Fiberglass Insulation includes foamed plastic, mineral
wool and other non-fiberglass insulation products for a range
of building envelope and HVAC applications. The materials
are used to reduce heat transfer by conduction, radiation or
convection, and are employed in various combinations to
achieve the desired outcome, which is usually thermal
comfort with reduced energy consumption.

Building Efficiency Services
Vision: To become a leader by developing local
content standards with energy technology
customers who would benefit from NEO-based solutions.
Building Efficiency Services includes comprehensive energy
service companies (ESCOs) and architecture and engineering
firms that provide building optimization services. Both play a
role in technology specification or sale, and therefore are in
a position to influence sector growth. Services influencing
behavioral changes, training and education, or taking place
after technology sales (such as contracting, operations and
maintenance, or measurment and verification) are not
included within the scope of this segment.

Regional Action Plan

Initiative 1: Develop an LED and/or LED controls supply base to serve regional needs cost competitively with leading Asian imports, resulting in one or more new products sourced with one-third of content from Northeast Ohio by 2018.

Initiative 2: Implement a regional collaboration in deep building retrofits (exterior wall insulation), including development of a clear financing model that increases ten-fold Northeast Ohio's deep retrofit rate by 2018.

Initiative 3: Leverage existing service providers to double the percentage of regionally sourced content in building retrofits by 2015.

Initiative 4: Clarify regional commercial and industrial building energy management system opportunities, including applicable regional capabilities, gaps and potential economic impact by 2015.
