NorTech

Government Engagement

NorTech engages with federal and state government and policy leaders to develop strategies that enhance cluster growth in Northeast Ohio. One of NorTech’s major goals in this area is to increase federal funding in the region to accelerate development of commercial activity and create jobs.

NorTech has identified specific federal funding opportunities in the following areas: advanced energy, innovation and entrepreneurship, manufacturers in transition, and support for incubators.  In addition, NorTech participates in national policy discussions in support of Northeast Ohio’s cluster goals and advises national committees and the federal government on cluster development.

From a state perspective, Ohio Third Frontier has been and continues to be an important program to accelerate statewide technology-based economic development.  Created in 2002 with widespread and bipartisan support from public- and private-sector individuals and organizations across Ohio, Third Frontier is designed to establish Ohio as a global innovation leader and fuel economic growth and job creation in our state.

Third Frontier provides state investment to promising industries, technologies and entrepreneurs. Funds are awarded through a competitive process in which independent experts review proposals and assure a base level of excellence for all projects.

In May 2010 Ohio voters reauthorized a $700 million bond initiative to extend funding for the program through 2016. Doing so will ensure that Ohio continues be a leader in innovation, competitive in a global economy, attractive to business investment, and offer good jobs to Ohio citizens.
