Despite the collapse of what is sometimes called the “dot com bubble,” Information and Communication Technology—encompassing computer software and hardware, telecommunications, internet and online services, systems integration, and professional services is still one of America’s fastest growing sectors.
While Northeast Ohio suffered less than other regions when the “bubble” burst, we have also failed to capitalize on the market opportunities afforded by this sector. Increasingly, information assets and infrastructure play a significant role in determining a region’s competitiveness and basic computing skills are becoming a necessity at all levels in the workplace. The “dark fiber” left unused in the ground after the dot com collapse may well represent an opportunity for Northeast Ohio to “leapfrog” other regions and move into a more competitive leadership position.
