NorTech Advanced Energy Speaker Series

Biomass to Energy: An Emerging Industry

Monday, December 14, 2009

On Monday, December 14, NorTech's Advanced Energy Speaker Series will present a discussion on "Biomass to Energy: An Emerging Industry" at the Great Lakes Science Center auditorium from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Biomass to energy applications are gaining momentum in the marketplace as a long term solution to reducing consumption of traditional energy sources. A panel of experts will provide an overview of the emerging US biomass industry as a source of clean, renewable energy and products. NASA Glenn Research and Quasar Energy Group (formerly Schmack BioEnergy) will share examples of how they are researching, developing and implementing biomass to energy solutions in Northeast Ohio.

Moderator:
Dave Karpinski, Vice President, NorTech

Panelists:
Simon J. Tripp, Senior Director, Technology Partnership Practice, Battelle  PRESENTATION
Mel Kurtz, President and CEO, Quasar Energy Group  PRESENTATION
Dr. Bilal Bomani, Bioscience and Technology Branch, NASA Glenn Research Center  PRESENTATION

A Dialogue on Cap and Trade: A Response to Climate Change

June 17, 2009
CSU Levin College of Urban Affairs Atrium
3:30 pm - 5:30 pm

NorTech's Advanced Energy Speaker Series and the CSU Levin College Forum Program, in partnership with MAGNET and The Greater Cleveland Partnership present "A Dialogue on Cap and Trade: A Response to Climate Change."

REGISTER NOW

The debate over cap and trade in the United State has intensified since President Obama took office in January 2009 and made climate change legislation one of his top national priorities. Congress is currently considering legislation to limit greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the effects of pollution on our environment. A newly proposed national "cap and trade" system would set a government ceiling on emissions and allow those companies emitting greenhouse gasses to buy and sell permits to meet the new regulations.

On June 17, a panel of experts will present a range of perspectives on the proposed cap and trade system and engage the public in an open discussion on this very timely topic. Join us as we explore "cap and trade," and how it could impact you and your community.

Welcoming Remarks:
Ned Hill, Professor and Interim Dean, Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs, Cleveland State University

Moderator:
Dave Karpinski, Vice President, NorTech

Panelists:
Northeast Midwest Institute
United States Climate Action Partnership
National Association of Manufacturers

Solar Power: How Nanotechnology is Leading the Way
February 3, 2009
Case Western Reserve University, Nord Hall 310

Widespread use of solar power technologies has been impeded by high costs and low efficiencies. Nonetheless, with recent breakthroughs in the development of novel materials and manufacturing processes, enabled in many cases by nanotechnology, solar power is predicted to be a competitive alternative energy source within a few years. This panel discussion will include presentations that give an overview of the solar industry and its potential, specific research activities enabling developments, and various perspectives on how companies are commercializing viable solar technologies enhanced by nanotechnology.

Moderated by: Alexis Abramson, Ph.D., Senior Fellow, NorTech; Executive Director of the Nano Network; and Assistant Professor, Case Western Reserve University

Panelists include:

Roshanak Hakimzadeh, Ph.D., Chief, Photovoltaic & Power Technologies Branch and Executive-in-Residence, NASA Glenn Research Center and CWRU Great Lakes Institute for Energy Innovation
